The St. Augustine Amphitheatre in St. Augustine, FL now called The Amp, is the top music and event facility in St. Johns County. Legendary performers such as Bob Dylan, Alabama, Modest Mouse, John Legend, Zac Brown Band, Boston, ZZ Top, Jeff Beck, John Fogerty, Weezer, Imagine Dragons, Alan Jackson, and Alice in Chains have all performed at The Amp.

The St. Johns County Cultural Events Division owns and runs the Amp, a venue with a 4,700-person capacity that regularly stages over 40 concerts and a variety of community activities, including the Saturday Farmers Market and the annual Sing Out Loud Festival, a free concert series.

History of The St. Augustine Amphitheatre

The amphitheater, which originally had just 2,000 seats, was constructed in 1965 to mark the 400th anniversary of St. Augustine's establishment. The land was a part of Anastasia State Park. The amphitheater was built in one of the coquina quarries that once supplied St. Augustine and Fort de San Marcos with building supplies.

A play for the amphitheater was commissioned by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Paul Green. Cross and Sword: a play about the Spanish settlement of Florida and a musical recreation of the early years was the result. The Florida Assembly named Cross and Sword the official state play in 1973.  Budget restrictions ended the play's more than 30-year run in 1996.

The following years saw little use of the amphitheater, but from 1997 to 2003, it did play host to a free summer Shakespeare Festival. However, St. Johns County bought the property in 2002, and an $8.7 million refurbishment was started that same year. The renovated building, which features a fiberglass tensile canopy over the main stage, reopened in August 2007.

Currently, it houses 4,092 seats. In addition, the theater changed its name to "The Amp". According to the 2019 Mid-Year assessment from the top newspaper in the concert industry, Pollstar Magazine, the Amp was recognized as the second-best amphitheater in the United States.
